And so Katie Holmes duly made her way to the nightly performance of her Dead Accounts, the Broadway play in which she is currently starring, on Wednesday afternoon.
The actress seems determined to leave the glitz and glamour of Hollywood behind as she was spotted arriving on foot, with her face free of makeup and her hair loose and unstyled.
Katie tried to her best to blend into the crowds milling about before entering through the stage door.
Since arriving in the city earlier in the year she has been making a concerted effort to act like an average New Yorker even riding the subway.
Katie celebrated her 34th birthday yesterday her first as a divorcee but rather than mark the occasion with a party the single mother chose a more low key visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with daughter Suri, 6.
Earlier in the day the two enjoyed breakfast at the Upper West Side bistro, bakery and chocolatier Sugar and Plumm, a source told Us Weekly.
After feasting on silver dollar pancakes and eggs benedict, Holmes was given a birthday surprise by pastry chef Pichet Ong: a homemade vanilla sponge cake layered with strawberry jam and vanilla buttercream frosting that said Happy Birthday Katie.
The Sun reported on Monday that the Batman actress will still be showering her daughter with gifts, which include a £15,000 Victorian playhouse, a £6,000 miniature Mercedes Benz, an iPad mini and some new additions to her wardrobe, with a Chloe fur coat and a Ralph Lauren dress reportedly on the list.
But she still has plenty to keep her occupied in the Big Apple as Dead Accounts is scheduled to run through to the end of February.
